Help and Advice

It’s easy to install cycle parking – but it’s also easy to get it wrong and to waste money on a badly designed facility that no-one wants to use.  Over the years we’ve seen numerous badly sited, badly installed, incorrectly spaced cycle racks.  It’s heartbreaking!

ParkThatBike can help you find the right sort of cycle parking (there are hundreds of types out there – some good, some not so good) and to get it correctly installed. We’ll be pleased to visit your premises and assess your needs. You’ll get a detailed report packed with ideas and impartial advice for improving your facilities and actively encouraging cycle travel.

Case Study: Cycle parking in Somerset.

ParkThatBike is helping Somerset County Council install high quality cycle parking in 10 different towns.  Local cycle campaigners have come up with a “long list” of possible locations for bike stands, our task is to visit each location and assess its suitablity. If it’s not suitable, we’ll find alternative locations.

Many locations will be on the public highway.  Others will be on private property, and here we identify the land owner, make contact and get their written permission for stands to be sited on their land.   We then mark out the exact spot where the stands are to be installed, and commission the contractor (we’re pleased to be working in collaboration with Lowrey Contractors) to fit the stands.

Case Study. Tewkesbury cycle parking audit.

ParkThatBike has been hard at work in Tewkesbury. We were commissioned by Gloucestershire County Council to carry out a comprehensive cycle parking audit throughout the town. Our mission was to check all thoroughfares and public spaces and to report on the availability of cycle parking, its type, precise location and condition. We also looked at places where people currently secure their bikes to railings or to street furniture as this is evidence of demand for more parking.

We visited all five wards of Tewkesbury: the historic town centre and the new housing and new industry that surrounds it. A report, complete with photographs and maps, has been produced and submitted. The initiative is part of the Count Me In project designed to improve people’s health and to increase levels of physical activity in the town.

Case Study: Cycle parking in Shrewsbury.

ParkThatBike is helping Shropshire County Council install high quality cycle parking in places such as surgeries, community centres, shops and other major journey generators. Our job is to identify good locations for stands, make contact with the land owner and secure their written permission for stands to be sited on their property. We then mark out the exact spot where the stands are to be installed, and liaise with the contractor.

Shrewsbury is a Cycling Demonstration Town and the council aims to double cycling levels by 2011 and make cycling an attractive day-to-day travel option. Strong branding and effective public engagement have got Cycle Shrewsbury off to a flying start. We’re pleased to be part of this exciting project and to be placing cycle parking in places where it will make a real difference.

Case Study. South Gloucestershire Sure Start Centres.

October 2009. ParkThatBike was engaged to visit 12 Sure Start children’s centres across South Gloucestershire to advise on cycle parking. We assessed existing provision and identified opportunities for fitting more Sheffield stands, plus, where possible, canopies or other weather protection.

Case Study. South Gloucestershire Council cycle parking report.

September 2009. South Gloucestershire covers a large area. Many of the urban parts merge into the Bristol conurbation, an area that has received extra funding from Cycling England to be a Cycling Demonstration City. ParkThatBike was engaged by South Gloucestershire Council to survey the area and to identify places in need of additional on-street cycle parking.

We checked shopping areas, railway stations, leisure centres, libraries and community centres and found more than 50 locations where Sheffield stands would be a useful addition. All our recommendations conform to the Council’s cycle parking standards. We produced a comprehensive report, complete with photographs and maps. And, to guide the contractors when they installed the new cycle stands, we marked out every location using temporary marker paint.
