Cycle Parking
Bike theft is a massive problem. Up to 700,000 bicycles are stolen every year in the UK and the majority are never recovered.
Research has shown that many people, especially those on low incomes, don’t replace a stolen bike, but give up cycling altogether. And no-one is going to start cycling if they think that their bike will be stolen or vandalised.
ParkThatBike provides a simple solution. We work in partnership with local authorities to run innovative cycle parking projects that provide free cycle stands. Our schemes make stands available to voluntary sector organisations, small businesses, health centres, schools, places of worship – in fact almost anywhere that has a need. We ensure that cycle parking is installed in prominent and convenient locations. Cyclists are then able to lock their bikes to something solid and immovable.
Studies have shown that schemes of this type lead to an increase in increase in cycling while cutting levels of cycle theft. As well as being of practical benefit, good bike parking sends a powerful signal: it says that cyclists are welcome and that the organisation is committed to encouraging low carbon forms of travel.
We can set up and manage a ParkThatBike scheme anywhere in the UK. Contact us for more information.
Case Study: Chester community cycle parking scheme.
Chester is a Cycling Demonstration Town that aims to make cycle travel an easy and appealing option. As part of the Cycle Chester programme new routes are being created and a new bridge over the River Dee will improve access to the city centre. Other measures include an expanded Bikeability training programme, community cycle schemes, and PR and marketing campaign.
More cycle parking will be installed across the city and ParkThatBike has been engaged to run a community cycle parking scheme. Small businesses, community groups, charities and other organisations are eligible for up to four stands free of charge. To apply please download the Chester application form (PDF).
Case Study: Cycle parking in Shrewsbury.

ParkThatBike is helping Shropshire County Council install high quality cycle parking in places such as surgeries, community centres, shops and other major journey generators. Our job is to identify good locations for stands, make contact with the land owner and secure their written permission for stands to be sited on their property. We then mark out the exact spot where the stands are to be installed, and liaise with the contractor.
Shrewsbury is a Cycling Demonstration Town and the council aims to double cycling levels by 2011 and make cycling an attractive day-to-day travel option. Strong branding and effective public engagement have got Cycle Shrewsbury off to a flying start. We’re pleased to be part of this exciting project and to be getting cycle parking into places where it will make a real difference.
Case Study: York community cycle parking scheme.

Small businesses, community groups, charities and other organisations can get free bike stands under the York community cycle parking scheme run by ParkThatBike on behalf of City of York Council. The aim is to increase cycle parking provision and to reduce levels of bike theft. York is a Cycling Demonstration City and already has high levels of cycle use. The council has ambitious plans to improve local infrastructure, raise awareness, and to make cycling a safe, speedy and convenient option for many more people. The cycle parking scheme is an important part of this programme. To apply for free cycle stands download the York application form (PDF).
Case Study: Tewkesbury cycle parking grants.
ParkThatBike is working with Life Cycle UK and Gloucestershire County Council to manage a programme of grants for employers based in Tewkesbury. Organisations can apply for up to 50 percent of the cost of installing cycle parking, or for other improvements that make the workplace more cycle friendly.
ParkThatBike promotes the scheme, assesses applications, makes site visits and offers advice to applicants. We approve schemes that are properly costed, well thought out and that will make a real difference. We check that the parking has been installed as agreed and then arrange for the funding to be released. The scheme is part of the Government-funded Count Me In initiative designed to improve people’s health and to increase levels of physical activity in the town. To apply for a grant please download the Tewkesbury application form (PDF). Plus, to whet your appetite and provide inspiration, we’ve put together a web-gallery that shows cycle stands, shelters, canopies and sheds of various designs. Then to apply for a grant download the application form and guidelines (PDF).
